Joining Instructions - Safety & Sea Survival
Welcome aboard and to the wonderful world of sailing
These Joining Instructions are applicable for the following courses:
- Full Safety & Sea Survival
- Refresher/Revalidation Safety & Sea Survival
World Sailing amendment (20.12.2023)
6.01.05 A refresher course may be taken to renew a certificate if the refresher course is completed within 2 years of the expiration of the individual’s most recent Offshore Personal Survival Course certificate. If not completed within two years you will need to complete a full course.
e-Learning
We recommend completion of the e-Learning course prior to attendance at the practical session, to ensure you achieve the best outcome.
eLearning course login details and instructions are forwarded via email upon receipt of payment. Please allow 24 hours for processing and look out for an email from our partner Above & Beyond Boating. Please check your junk mail before contacting us if you are unable to locate the login details.
- The e-Learning assessment becomes available once you complete all the study units. The study time is approximately 6 hours for a full course and 3 hours for a revalidation.
- Please download the e-Learning course completion certificate and email it to the PSS office as soon as you complete it.
- PSS cannot issue your SSSC completion certificate until we receive the e-Learning completion certificate. You have a maximum of 12 months to complete and submit the eLearning certificate after completing the practical.
- The certificate will be valid for 5 years from the practical pool date.
Practical Training Session - Flare Drill
The Flare Drill is mandatory for all full course students, and optional for revalidation students, although we highly recommend you attend to refresh your skills.
- You must wear enclosed shoes – thongs, crocs and other non enclosed shoes will not be accepted
- Australian Sailing number – if you already have an AS number, please advise the office prior or on the day. This is used to register your certificate and avoid duplicate records in your name
Practical Training Session - Pool Drills
The Pool Drills are mandatory for full and revalidation students.
- Lifejackets – We recommend you bring your own inflatable lifejacket. Recharge cylinders are not expensive and available widely. We will have manually inflatable lifejackets available, and you can arrange to inflate using a gas bottle if arranged prior with our office (additional cost for the re-arm kit).
- Wet Weather Gear – You are required to wear full wet weather gear (jackets and pants) for the pool session. Spray jackets and pants are not acceptable.
Inflatable lifejackets must be serviced annually following the manufacturer’s guidelines. Wearing your lifejacket and testing the firing mechanism during the wet drills is a fantastic opportunity to become more familiar with your own equipment. Please ensure you have allowed enough time after the wet drills to have your lifejackets serviced and ready for when it is next needed. Automatic and Hammer activations will have expiry dates on them. Although the servicing and “re-arming” is more expensive for automatic and hammer-activated lifejackets than manual lifejackets, please check any automatic or hammer-activation lifejackets you own to see if they are expired/about to expire and could be activated during your training session before they need replacing due to the firing head expiry date.
