COMMERCIAL QUALIFICATION

Professional Practices and Responsibilities

Each year around 4,500 people apply to the RYA for a commercial endorsement in order to use their RYA qualifications professionally as skipper or crew.  From April 2012 anyone wishing to re-validate or apply for the endorsement must complete the online PPR course first.

All new applicants for a commercially endorsed RYA Certificate of Competence must first pass the PPR course.  Anyone renewing a commercially endorsed RYA Certificate of Competence must pass the PPR course prior to their next renewal date, if they have not already done so.

Prior knowledge:
course outline:
  • During the course you will cover the legal framework that commercial operates need to adhere to – whatever vessel they work on.  The course will help you understand and execute your duty of care, and give you the principles, guidance and techniques to help make the right choices and decisions.

The course is broken down into four modules:

  • Commercial environment – showing how you fit into the professional maritime world
  • People – explaining the importance of correct manning, keeping your skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessels
  • Vessel – teaching about the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment and how to create and implement risk control and operating procedures
  • Purpose – making sure your vessel is suitable and legal for the work you are carrying out, your obligations in protecting the environment, appropriate planning and situational awareness.

If you have to retake your exam there is a small fee payable direct to the RYA.

course exemptions:

You do not need to take the PPR course if you hold an MCA Certificate of Competency as Officer of the Watch or Master. (This does not include the Master of Yachts 200 gt endorsement which you may have on your RYA Yachtmaster certificate.)

updating your ppr certificate:
  • After you have taken your first PPR course you will need to take a short refresher course and a new test when you renew your Commercial Endorsement
  • If you are over 65 and subject to more regular medical fitness examinations, you do not need to take the PPR course each time you renew your medical.
additional resources:
  • Small Vessels Manual
  • RYA Commercial Regulations Small Vessels (eBook)
These can be added to your course when booking online.
