RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship

RYA Day Skipper Theory

This is a 45 hour theory course held online via Zoom

There are 17 sections in the syllabus ranging from understanding nautical terminology to calculating tides and tidal streams. In broad terms the content relates to:

  • Information: locating and using information such as weather forecasts, tidal data or navigational information in the planning and execution of a passage
  • Regulations and guidance: gain a working knowledge of the collision avoidance rules, marine pollution responsibilities and carriage of safety equipment requirement for small yachts
  • Techniques: lean and plan the use of pilotage and navigation techniques, passage planning strategy and dealing with emergency situations

Starting Friday 6pm to 9pm & Saturdays and Sundays 8.30am to 4.30pm over two weekends in May

Then the RYA Day Skipper Practical – 5 Days and 4 nights live aboard – once we’re back on the water!

On successful completion of the RYA Day Skipper Practical you can automatically apply to the RYA for the ICC International Certificate of Competence This is required to skipper your own yacht or hire a yacht or powerboat in over 140 countries. The certification is for sail up to 24m (which includes power up to 10m).

RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Theory

Advanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper course. This course equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages. Course topics include: position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge, use of almanacs and admiralty publications, electronic position finding equipment, taking and interpreting forecasts, plotting weather systems, weather predictions using a barometer and by observation, collision regulations, customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad.

This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Yachtmaster™ Coastal and Yachtmaster™ Offshore practical exams, concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills.

RYA Ocean Theory

Unravel the mysteries of astro navigation, using a sextant, ocean passage making, worldwide meteorology and electronic navigation aids.

This course is for those aspiring to blue water cruising and is ideal for holders of the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate who are preparing for their first ocean passage.Topics covered include:The earth and the celestial sphere, practical guide to use and care of sextant at sea, meridian altitudes, sun, star and other sights, ocean passage planning

Prior to the course your navigation skills should be at the standard of the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased course.

If you are working towards your Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence, completion of this shorebased course exempts you from the written exam.

RYA Radar

A one-day course giving you an understanding of radar as an aid to navigation and collision avoidance.

Cruising boats increasingly have radar on board. The International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea state that if you have a radar, you must know how to use it.

Radar is probably the most versatile of all electronic navigation aids, but the best results are only obtained when you know how to use all the functions correctly. It is not an all seeing eye, and can easily mislead those who do not understand its controls, allow for its limitations, or interpret its picture.

Course topics include: how radar set works, how its adjustments and features affect the way it works, target definition, radar reflectors, types of radar display, radar plotting, the use of a radar in navigation and collision avoidance
