COURSE OVERVIEW

The Pool and Flare only course is designed to allow participants who have completed their theory with another provider, to participate in the required practical drills. 

We bring the latest safety and emergency equipment to the pool for handing and discussion, including:

  • EPIRB and PLB3
  • Life Cell
  • Immersion Suit
  • Thermal Protective Aids
  • Drogues

During the pool session you will expand on strategies for coping with emergencies at sea as well as familiarisation with safety and emergency equipment, its purpose, deployment and use.

You will have individual practice at:

  • righting an upturned liferaft
  • entering a liferaft unassisted
  • use of a drogue to manouver a vessel
  • retrieving crew with a throwing line
  • deploying an inflatable lifejacket prior to and once in the water
  • igniting a hand-held flare 
ISSUE OF YOUR CERTIFICATE

It is important that you provide us with your current Australian Sailing number.  Please note, you may have multiple numbers if a member of different Clubs.

Your Safety and Sea Survival Certificate will be issued following completion of both eLearning and practical drills.

  • Email us a copy of your completed Theory Assessment (either prior or after your practical component)
  • PSS advises Australian Sailing of your completion of both parts of the course
  • Australian Sailing issues your Safety and Sea Survival Certificate

WORLD SAILING AMENDMENT

When a revalidation course can be taken for your Safety & Sea Survival Certificate.​

Changes were published in the Offshore Special Regulations (OSR) on the 20th of December 2023 which reads as follows:

6.01.05 A refresher/revalidation course may be taken to renew a certificate if the refresher/revalidation course is completed within 2 years of the expiration of the individual’s most recent Offshore Personal Survival Course certificate. If not completed within two years you will need to complete a full course.
