LONG RANGE OPERATOR CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY (Lrocp)
The Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) for VHF marine radio is ideal for obtaining Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and International Yacht Training (IYT) qualifications that mandate a marine VHF radio licence.
The SCROCP qualification allows you to operate VHF marine radiotelephonyĀ equipment and the MF/HF marine telephone equipment.
Our VHF licence course exceeds the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) standards.
COURSE DELIVERY
- eLearning course
- Online exam
- Virtual Practical Assessment
Our eLearning modules step you gradually through the fundamentals of VHF radios, how they work and how you use them. We anticipate these modules should take you around 4-hours to complete.
The examination consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and you have 60 minutes to complete. Our course results indicate most candidates achieve a score of at least 96%, well over the 70% required.
Practical Assessment is crucial and allows you to work through the VHF marine radio operations. Engaging directly with your invigilator, you will put into practice your eLearning completing practical simulations and discussions encompassing Digital Selective Calling (DSC), broadcasting distress messages and conducting radio checks.
ABILITY AFTER THE COURSE
- Operate Marine Radiotelephony equipment for enclosed, inshore and international offshore cruising
- Operate VHF including DSC
- Operate MF/HF (Medium Frequency and High Frequency) marine telephone equipment
- Apply for an MMSI number for your vessel
applying for lrocp certificate
The Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency is issued by the Office of Maritime Communications (OMC). The fee of $89 (Dec 2024) is payable directly to them and is separate from the course fee.
The fee must be paid between booking and taking an exam, ie before you sit the exam, and is managed online.
Please note that the OMC typically takes up to 15 working days from the assessment date to process and mail your SROCP. Upon request to the OMC, a scan of the SROCP photo card can be emailed to you. This still takes 15 working days but saves waiting for the hard copy to arrive.
The current fee covers both Australian and International postage for your certificate.
MMSI Number
A VHF certificate will allow you to apply for an MMSI number for your vessel, which is required to transmit AIS information and enable the digital selective calling function on a radio.
Digital Selective Calling (DSC) requires an MMSI number to function. The MMSI number application requirements in Australia are either an SROCP or an LROCP.
After obtaining your marine radio licence, apply for a new MMSI number or transferring an existing one is straightforward and free of charge.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) typically issues MMSI numbers overnight, upon receiving your completed application and proof of your marine radio qualification.
SHORT RANGE OPERATOR CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY (SROCP)
The Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) for VHF marine radio is ideal for obtaining Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and International Yacht Training (IYT) qualifications that mandate a marine VHF radio licence.
The SCROCP qualification allows you to operate VHF marine radiotelephonyĀ equipment only.
