RYA Coastal Skipper Theory & Practical Package 
				This package combines the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Theory & Virtual and the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical courses and are conducted on a Monohull.

We strongly recommend students have a good grasp of theory subjects to DSST level prior to attending the CSST course.
It is an intensive course covering advanced navigation techniques including – position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge including secondary port calculations, navigation in restricted visibility, Admiralty publications and electronic position finding equipment. Meteorology includes getting and the interpretation of forecasts, the plotting of weather systems, weather prediction and electronic navigation.
You will learn to use all the available information and electronic navigation systems for planning and executing passage plans. The International Regulations for Prevention of Collision at Sea are covered in detail, and we will also learn more about yacht stability and safety offshore.
Virtual Sessions for the CSST do NOT teach the course syllabus. They are designed to give additional insight and assist with any specific areas of difficulty encountered whilst studying the eLearning. We encourage you to review all Lessons in each Unit, prior to the relevant virtual session. You can then attempt the quiz questions on your own after the virtual session.

Recommended Previous Experience:
- Start Skippering; and
- RYA Day Skipper Practical course; and
- 800 nautical miles logged, 12 night hours, 2 days as skipper; or
- 30 days at sea on a vessel less than 24m LOA
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE:
- Charts - use of parallel rules, portland plotter and dividers; how to plot a position using latitude and longitude; application of variation; chart symbols and representation of direction and distance; true bearings, course and speed; plotting DR, EP, CTS for a day passage into another port; use of GNSS and chart plotters
- Tidal Streams– tidal theory definitaions, levels and datum; tide tables and predicting tides in standard and secondary ports; tidal streams; effects of tide on passage planning; lat, hat, fot, rot etc; obtaining tide times for required port, calculating depth required for a given time, completing tidal curve diagram.
- Meteorology – principals of weather; sources of broadcast meteorological information; knowledge of terms used in marine forecasts; basic knowledge of highs, lows and fronts; local winds
- Passage Planning – Preparation of navigation plan for short coastal passages; meteorological and tidal considerations; contingency planning, including alternate port, first aid and communications; use of waypoints; confirming position by independent source; keeping a navigational record; types of fog and why they occur; precautions and limitations imposed by fog
- Pilotage and Buoyage – Use of transits, leading lines and clearing lines; IALA; pilotage plans and harbour entry

THEORY COURSE OVERVIEW:
The eLearning and virtual course includes 16 modules blended with six – three-hour virtual sessions plus exams. The online course can be completed at your own pace and revisited to refresh your knowledge at any time in the future.
During the virtual sessions, the more challenging topics are taught to increase your knowledge in advance of completing the e-learning questions. This can enable a deeper understanding and help to reduce the time to complete the exercises. In addition, the instructor adds to the course with real life examples of the subjects covered.
This unique course is accessible from anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere. The virtual training sessions are run from 1800 to 2100 (Sydney time) midweek evenings this is the course for you. The course is first class and delivered by our expert RYA Yachtmaster Instructors.

It is important to complete the theory for each Course before the practical to achieve a successful outcome in the learning process.
The practical courses are live-aboard, each over a 5 day/4 night period.
RYA Yacht Master Coastal/Offshore Practical Course is a five-day advanced course for those who have knowledge of sailing and navigation, wanting to undertake coastal passages by day and night.
Each student will skipper more challenging passages and learn more about passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations. The course will be taken in tidal waters and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.
Skippering a yacht on coastal and offshore passages demands strong navigation, seamanship and leadership skills. Your instructor will guide you through navigation, both offshore and in limited visibility, weather forecasting and passage planning, watch keeping, preparation for sea and handling heavy weather. You will put this all into practice as each student plans and executes passages taking complete command of the yacht.
Coastal skippers must be good boat handlers and you will receive plenty of practice mooring the yacht and have at least 4 hours night sailing. Weather permitting the yacht will undertake a longer coastal passage. At the successful completion of the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal course you will be awarded the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Course Completion Certificate and will be able to skipper coastal passages safely and confidently.
