RYA 5 Day Practical Joining Instructions
Course Duration 5 Days and 4 nights
APPLICABLE FOR:
- RYA Competent Crew Practical
- RYA Day Skipper Practical
- RYA Coastal Skipper Practical
WHERE TO MEET:
- Pacific Sailing School - at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, 1 New Beach Road, Rushcutters Bay
- Please be at the office by 9.45am
- You will return to the CYCA on the final day by 1600
WHAT TO BRING:
- Personal gear in a soft sailing bag (hard cases cannot be stowed on board). We suggest, please bring warm clothes as it can get cold at night.
- Sun protection / sunglasses / sailing gloves and a hat.
- A sleeping bag, pillow, pillow slip and towel.
- Showers are available at the yacht clubs only as water supply is limited on board.
- Sailing shoes (Black soled shoes are not permitted on board), sailing gloves, head torch, sailing knife.
- Personal navigation equipment (If you have it), logbook, notebook.
- Wet weather gear
LIVING ABOARD:
- You may be required to share a cabin (single supplement is available)
- You will be required to clean all used surfaces and the heads each day
- The latest safety equipment - life jackets, harness are provided
food:
- Meals - Ample supplies for 4 English or Continental breakfasts, 4 lunches and 3 cooked dinners are provided (one meal ashore at own cost)
- We do not cater for special diets, so please feel free to bring any additional food to meet your requirements
- We have plenty of fresh food and vegetables on board
- Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice and Soft Drinks (you are welcome to bring alternative drinks)
- The crew are to prepare/clean after each meal
SEASICKNESS:
Here are some ways you can reduce the risk of becoming seasick:
- Be well-rested before setting sail
- Consult your Doctor and try out any antiemetic drugs a week or two before sailing
- Get fresh air
- Avoid stimuli that can trigger nausea
- Don’t go below offshore on your first few outings to do chart work or cook
vessels:
- Have been cleaned and disinfected by maintenance staff prior to students boarding. We request the boat be returned in the same condition, clean and tidy
- Our Sail Training Vessels meet Australian Maritime Safety Authority and RYA requirements regarding its safety, use and the area of operation
- They are manned by qualified instructors and the vessel is insured
Important notes for RYA Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper students:
- Please bring your RYA logbook if you have one (We will give you one if you do not have one)
- Please email a copy of your RYA Theory completion certificate before the course.
- Please bring a passport photo.
- The RYA Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper certificate cannot be issued or registered without the photo.
- The RYA Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper certificate cannot be issued or registered without the theory completion certificate.
- If you have limited sailing experience, we strongly recommend completing our Keelboat courses on our smaller J24 yachts.
- During this course you are being assessed on your sailing, navigation, pilotage, and collision regulations for the certificate and we will make sure you can apply your theory knowledge in a practical application while learning how to handle a larger yacht.
- Successful applicants will receive a certificate prior to leaving the course.
- On successful completion, you can apply to the RYA for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC – to charter or skipper your own yacht overseas).

- Please be at Gibson Marina by 9.45am
- You will return to Gibson Marina by 1600 on the final day
- Please contact the office if you need transport to/from Pittwater
